Evaluation of Skagerak ECR Programme - The Arctic Ocean System

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, the University of Gothenburg, the British Antarctic Survey and the NERC Arctic Office jointly organised and conducted a ship-based training programme on R/V Skagerak in August 2025. The programme was part of a nine-day research expedition to central-east Greenland, starting and ending in Reykjavik. The vessel R/V Skagerak is operated by the University of Gothenburg. Five berths were available within the programme for early career researchers.

The programme, entitled ‘The Arctic Ocean System’, combined practical hands-on work—including familiarisation with marine sampling techniques—training on how to plan and conduct Arctic marine research, and methods for marine observations and data recording. Lectures covering the coupled Arctic climate system were included as well.

A dedicated ECR programme coordinator was provided by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. The programme was delivered in partnership with the KANG-GLAC researchers and technicians.
