Evaluation of ECR Research School on Arctic Ocean Climate System
Thank you for contributing to the ECR Research School on IB Oden! Now we want to evaluate how you think we organized and performed this, so we would appreciate very much if you fill out this questionnaire. It should take less than 10 minutes and all answers will be anonymous.
Background
The Canada-Sweden collaboration opened up free berths on Oden for the 2025 Arctic expedition, and an ECR programme was created, similar to the one during the 2016 expedition. A general strategy was not to consider students as “cheap labour” who might learn something. Instead, the students and their learning were placed at the centre, while still conducting high-quality research in different disciplines. Since the collaboration with the Canadians dictated navigation, the programme could not have an overarching focus.
To achieve this, an “instruction and analysis” component was added within each Work Package (WP), with the intention that the students, in addition to the practical work, would deepen the learning within their own topics and gain some insight into what happens with data and samples after an expedition. The “extended lecture program” across the different WPs was designed to provide everyone with a common knowledge base, not just an overview of the disciplines represented onboard, but also what these are about and how they connect. To support this, WP leaders were asked to provide three lectures each: one about the topic in general, one about the Arctic and one about the Work Package. Finally, to strengthen interdisciplinary learning, “workshops” were introduced.
The research school programme, therefore, came to consist of four parts: i) Practical work in Work Packages (WPs); ii) Instructions and analysis within the WPs; iii) Lectures, and iv) Group work in Workshops on different themes. After some general questions, these four parts are evaluated separately. For each question, please select the option that best reflects your opinion. Each section also ends with an optional free-text question.
Please note! If you return to the top of the page after submitting the questionnaire, and the questionnaire is still there, it means you missed at least one question. A confirmation message will appear (the questionnaire also disappears) once you have successfully submitted.

Would you also consider becoming a resource for next year’s research school expedition by being available for and advising a new batch of students? Then send an email to michaelt@misu.su.se before the end of the year!
