Work in the laboratories
Welcome to the laboratories at the Abisko Scientific Research Station. We are happy to assist you in your research and ask that you follow station rules to ensure the safety of other guests and staff. It is important to know that there are specific rules that may differ from those you are used to. Therefore, make sure that you read through the information on this page.
When you arrive at the station
Please note that we will no longer allow new projects to be started in the labs during weekends as staff are away and unable to assist you. Therefore, plan your stay accordingly.
1. Label and lock chemicals in the designated cabinet
When you arrive you need
- label all chemicals you brought to the station with owner/research group and expiration date
- place the chemicals in our locked chemical cabinets
- provide documentation to the laboratory manager: MSDS, risk assessment and permission from the County Administrative Board. What conditions? Is it clear which documents are requested?
2. Participate in the introduction to the laboratories
We will meet you at the reception during office hours and introduce you to the laboratories. This is mandatory for anyone planning to use the labs, especially if you are new to the station.
3. Await approval for laboratory use
To ensure that you are familiar with your planned laboratory procedures, we will ask for a brief presentation of your project before we approve the use of the laboratories. After you have been introduced to the labs and given approval to begin your work in the lab, you can use the booking sheets hanging outside each lab to coordinate your work with other guests.
For a safe and secure working environment
Please note that the research leader is responsible for ensuring that everyone involved in the laboratory work has received instructions on how the experiments are carried out, on chemical handling and potential risks. This means that everyone who will be involved in the laboratory work must
- know procedures
- know safety measures
- read through the instructions on this website and other documentation provided by the station.
Abisko is approximately 100 km from the nearest hospital or doctor - keep this in mind when assessing risks.
Laboratory Safety Guidelines
In the event of an accident
If an accident related to chemical handling occurs, report it immediately to the laboratory manager or other staff at the station.

Clothes and shoes for lab work
We ask that you remove your outdoor shoes when entering the laboratories so that the clean areas are not soiled.
Personal protective equipment is always available in the laboratories and should be used daily.
You need to have shoes that
- covers your toes
- are thick enough to protect your feet from broken pieces of glass
- sits firmly on your feet.
You need to have clothes that
- cover as much of your skin as possible, meaning no shorts and short tops are allowed.
Waste disposal
In order to ensure that Abisko's environment is not damaged by the station's research activities, it is important to follow the instructions regarding the handling of waste found in each laboratory. They are there to guide you outside of office hours or when staff are busy with other tasks.
It is particularly important to have the correct management of waste that contains
- dangerous and strong chemicals
- isotopically labeled
- materialnon-native plants and soil
Keep in mind
- that all your chemicals (prepared working solutions and waste) should be clearly labelled and stored appropriately
- never ever throw chemicals in the sink or in the trash can
Ask the station's staff if you have any questions about waste management.
When you leave the station
- Clean up your laboratory and dispose of all waste according to waste management regulations.
- If chemicals were taken to the station, arrange transport back or discuss the possibility of storing them at the station.
Chemical storage
The station has storage space intended for short-term storage, but you always need permission to leave chemicals, equipment, samples and the like at the station. We regularly make inventories of chemicals, fridges/freezers, and storage areas and all unmarked items are thrown away.
