The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat participated in the 28th European Research Vessel Operators (ERVO) Meeting in Trieste, Italy, together with colleagues from the Swedish Research Vessel Network (SON), including R/V Svea, R/V Skagerak and I/B Oden.
The annual ERVO meeting brings together research vessel operators from across Europe to exchange knowledge on fleet developments, new technologies, sensors, scientific equipment and future expedition planning. This year's programme also included a technical visit to the Italian Antarctic research vessel Laura Bassi.
One clear trend discussed during the meeting was the growing investment in Antarctic-capable research vessels across Europe. While several countries are building new ships designed to operate in Antarctic waters, relatively few combine this capability with the high icebreaking performance required for the most demanding polar environments. This highlights the continued importance of vessels such as I/B Oden for supporting advanced research in ice-covered regions.
The meeting also reinforced the value of international collaboration in developing marine research infrastructure and ensuring access to the polar regions for the scientific community.
