Mobilisation for the Canada–Sweden Arctic Ocean 2025 expedition is underway in the port of Helsingborg, where the icebreaker Oden is being prepared and outfitted for the expedition. Research instruments are being installed, and the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat’s winches, laboratories and other equipment are being finalised.
Between 9 August and 19 September 2025, Oden will carry out a joint expedition with the Canadian icebreaker CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent to map the Arctic Ocean seabed. The expedition is led by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada.
At the same time, an Early Career Scientist programme is taking place, offering young researchers hands-on experience through observations and measurements across seven work packages linked to their research projects.
In parallel with the scientific activities, Oden will also support the Polar Connect project, which explores the potential for laying fiber-optic cables between Europe and Asia via the Arctic. In addition, a measuring buoy will be deployed in collaboration with the Norwegian programme GoNorth.
Artist Sara-Vide Ericson and teacher Cristina Bernárdez Marti will also participate in this year’s expedition.
Oden departs from the port of Helsingborg at the end of July and continues from Svalbard on 9 August.
