Measurements in the Victoria Fjord

2024-08-25, Victoria Fjord
We have now been in the Victoria fjord for almost a week, using the 24 hours each day to map the fjord's seabed with the help of Oden's multibeam, take water samples, collect sediment samples from the seabed, and measure various parameters in the water with the help of automated small boats. Using helicopters, research groups fly ashore to collect samples and measure various processes.
Researchers Felicity Holmes and Jamie Barnett at Stockholm University have set up time-lapse cameras to monitor the movements of the glacier front. The glacier, located deep within the Victoriafjord, is called the C.H. Ostenfeld Glacier and has calved enormous amounts of icebergs into the fjord. The entire inner part of the fjord is filled with icebergs, and I/B Oden is moving through the outer parts of the fjord with great caution.
