On 24 June 2026, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat will open a thematic call focused on the Arctic. The call constitutes the first step in the Polar Research Process, through which one or more selected themes will help shape the Secretariat’s operational support for polar research in the coming years.
Due to earmarked government funding, the use of the icebreaker Oden must form part of the operational implementation of all, or parts, of the proposed theme.
Researchers are invited to propose interdisciplinary research themes that can serve as a foundation for coordinated research activities during the preliminary period 2028–2030. The use of Oden should primarily be planned for 2029 and/or 2030, as other commitments are already scheduled for 2028. Depending on the proposed activities, however, these commitments may potentially be combined with the needs of the thematic proposal.
General guidelines for thematic proposals
The call focuses on open and developable themes with a strong scientific foundation, clear societal relevance, and the potential to bring together researchers across disciplinary boundaries.
In addition, the following applies:
- The proposed research activities must involve research infrastructure in the form of the icebreaker Oden.
- The proposal should include collaboration between field-based and non-field-based research.
Key dates
- 📅 Call opens: 24 June 2026
- 📅 Application deadline: 30 September 2026
A workshop is planned for 15 October 2026 in Stockholm, where applicants will be expected to present their thematic proposals. The purpose of the workshop is to facilitate discussion of potential synergies and opportunities for further development of the proposals.
Please note that the call does not provide research funding. Research funding must be sought separately through the relevant research funding organisations and their own funding calls.
More information will be published when the call opens on polar.se. You can read more about the Polar Research Process here.
