After six weeks in the Arctic Ocean, the icebreaker Oden has returned to Adventfjorden outside Longyearbyen. The participants leave the ship in small boats before flying home. This marks the end of the successful Canada–Sweden Arctic Ocean 2026 expedition. Oden will then continue to Helsingborg for post-expedition demobilisation.

An important part of the expedition was to support Canada’s work under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) by collecting data on the structure of the seabed and the extent of the Arctic continental shelf. In parallel, the researchers studied interactions among the ocean, sea ice and atmosphere, while an international research school gave doctoral students and early-career researchers practical experience of research and fieldwork in the Central Arctic Ocean.

The work of analysing the samples and data collected during the expedition now begins. The friendships and collaborations forged on board will also continue long after the participants have left Oden.
