Leading research in the Arctic

The research school is now in its fifth week, and the students are becoming increasingly independent. Measurements and sampling procedures that were completely unfamiliar at the beginning have now become routine. It is clear that the students are working independently and taking considerable responsibility for our shared goals.
Learning under real-world conditions
The research school covers a broad range of natural science research on the Arctic climate system. The research leaders work closely and intensively with students from a variety of backgrounds. They lead the activities within their respective work packages and facilitate scientific discussions, seminars and lectures. Together, the research leaders have many years of experience in polar research and teaching at universities in Sweden and abroad. Even so, leading a research school in the Arctic is a very special undertaking.
A research expedition offers many learning opportunities. Most of the students are conducting fieldwork for the first time, and the research leaders generously share their experience. Equipment sometimes breaks down, requiring the team to solve problems together. Learning also requires room to make mistakes, learn from them and develop. When I ask the students what they have learned, one recurring theme is the importance of being flexible. Fieldwork works best when you prepare for different scenarios and have a plan you can adapt to the circumstances. But only in the field do you truly understand what this means.
The art of observation
Another important aspect of field research is learning how to observe. Early in the expedition, we were surprised by how much open water there was. We then began to wonder about the absence of the typical melt ponds that often form on sea ice during the summer. In recent days, we have been fascinated by how quickly new sea ice has formed around us and how the ice has become less mobile. Yesterday, we caught a sea angel in the plankton net (Clione limacina). Besides being beautiful and almost mythical, it plays an important role in the Arctic food web.
At the beginning of the expedition, the research leaders faced an enormous workload. In recent days, several of them have joked that they are now redundant on board. The students are taking initiative, starting experiments, collaborating, and exploring creative ideas and research questions. This clearly shows that the research leaders have done a fantastic job!
