The icebreaker Oden, a unique asset

The Oden is a 108-m-long, 24,500-hp, diesel-powered Swedish icebreaker, originally built to assist commercial shipping but later modified to function as a platform for research in polar regions. The Oden is an extremely capable icebreaker for Arctic conditions, and was the first non-nuclear icebreaker to reach the North Pole. For ASCOS, Oden will serve as both a base for the researchers and a platform for sampling, as she will drift alongside an ice floe near the North Pole for an extended period.
