Research projectsThe research projects participating in Beringia 2005 can be divided into three themes: geological and ecological history, ecology and evolution, and changes in the climate and ecosystem. The main focus of the expedition is on ecological issues in the Arctic, the area around the Bering Strait in particular. Temporal perspectives vary in the research projects and include prehistoric time and variations in modern species. The temporal perspective can be used in research to put together scenarios on past or future changes. This is especially interesting in the Arctic, where the development of the region during all phases of Earth has been relatively unknown, even though it is highly vulnerable to environmental impact of various kinds.
