Management and administration

Overall planning of the operations takes place within management and administration as well as preparation of the decisions of the Board regarding annual financial reports, budget planning, and other strategic tasks. Contacts with government departments and other authorities, as well as representation of the Secretariat in international contexts are other tasks handled by management. The unit is also responsible for finances, staff issues, registrations and archives, and other internal administrative tasks. The administrative work also includes support for planning and execution of expeditions.

Expeditions and logistics

The planning, organisation, and implementation of the Secretariat's expeditions involve extensive practical tasks, e.g. to provide expeditions with support staff, training, equipment, supplies, and transportation. Co-ordination of research programs and international co-ordination are also important tasks in the planning of expeditions.

The Logistic Centre deals with the practical preparations of equipment. Communications, technology, and IT equipment are important parts of the preparations for expeditions, as well as technical support for researchers. The development of technology in Polar Regions occurs in co-operation with industry and universities.

Communication and documentation

The media and the public pay great attention to expeditions to the Polar Regions, as do all types of schools. The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat provides information about current Swedish Polar research and about expedition activities.

Scientific results from the SWEDARP and SWEDARCTIC research programs and other Swedish Polar literature are documented annually. The Secretariat also has a small library of Polar books, Polar magazines and other Polar literature.

Environment

Activities in the Polar regions must affect the environment as little as possible. In the Environmental Unit, control programs and other measures related to environmental protection are implemented, e.g. descriptions of environmental effects. The work also includes international environmental co-operation and being responsible for the handling of permits and supervision.
