Research Access to Eastern Areas in Svalbard

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat has been invited by the Svalbard Science Forum to take part in the workshop Research Access to Eastern Areas in Svalbard, 16–17 February 2010. The goal of the workshop is to identify existing and future opportunities and challenges that both research and management of Eastern Svalbard face and suggest potential solutions.

Prof. Veijo Pohjola, Uppsala University, will be the Swedish delegate during the workshop. Swedish scientists with an interest in Eastern Svalbard are encouraged to contact Veijo before the meeting (veijo.pohjola@geo.uu.se). Conclusions from the meeting will be available through the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. [2010-01-22]

Swedish Environmental Monitoring

Since the Reykjavik Ministerial Meeting of the Arctic Council in the fall of 2004, there is an ongoing effort to improve international cooperation on observation and monitoring. The process has moved forward under the umbrella name SAON (Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks). With the aim to compile an overview of ongoing Swedish monitoring activities, the report Swedish Environmental Monitoring North of 60°N was commissioned by the Swedish Committee for the International Polar Year 2007–2008 through its special Working Group for Monitoring and Data Management. International Polar Year

The International Polar Year (IPY) was a large scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009. Although the IPY officially came to a close in 2009, many projects and activities will continue on.
