The operations of the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat during the first summer of the International Polar Year 20072008 (IPY) had a large focus on using the icebreaker Oden as a research platform. Oden left Sweden in the middle of May to pursue two test-cruises before upcoming Arctic expeditions. In July Oden was chartered for the research expedition AGAVE (Arctic Gakkel Vents), a US-financed project where scientist explored life in the hydrothermal vents from the core of the Earth, which has been found at the Gakkel Ridge, a mountain ridge below the Arctic Ocean. In August the Danish-Swedish research expedition LOMROG (Lomonosov Ridge off Greenland) followed. LOMROG studied parts of the Arctic glaciation history, variations in the covering of the permanent pack ice sheet and the development of the Arctic Ocean circulation and its function in the climate system. The Danish science team worked in the project "Data acquisition north of Greenland" which is a part of the The Danish Continental Shelf Project. LOMROG ended when Oden anchored at Svalbard in the middle of September to drop off it's passengers, and then the ship continued to Sweden to offload equipment and samples. Oden then went to the shipyard to get ready for the upcoming Antarctic season.
The research at the station Kinnvika built for the third International Polar Year 19571958 and situated on Nordaustlandet in Svalbard was restarted with a focus on glaciology, geology, biology, ecology and atmospheric chemistry. Research projects based in social sciences and humanities were also carried out. Swedish project leader is Veijo Pohjala, Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala university, in cooperation with Arctic Center/University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland.
