The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat's yearbook contains information about the Secretariat's activities, annual accounts and cruise reports from the research projects.
Antarctica is 98% ice and snow covered, so transport on the continent requires tracked vehicles and snowmobiles. A considerable amount of Antarctic research is dependent on the transport system.
These vehicles are used for transport between ship anchorages near the ice shelf edge and the research stations. The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat has developed a system of vehicles, sleds, and accommodation modules for transport to the research stations.
To create vehicles adapted to the Antarctic environment, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat has participated in developing the TL4 and TL6 Swedish civil all-terrain vehicles, built by Berco Produktion AB/Scandinavian Terrain Vehicles. The new TL6 has a chassis based on a BVS10 military tracked vehicle, provided by BAE Systems Hägglunds, and Volvo’s new FL6 driver’s cabin.
