The summer course Environment and Society in a Changing Arctic (AK1214) will take place 18 June to 25 July. The course will consist of students from KTH and the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, but is also open for students from other Swedish Universities. The course consists of lectures given at KTH Campus Valhallavägen and of a 10 day field exercise at the Arctic Archipelago Svalbard.
There is an increasing international interest in the Arctic, as a consequence of the changes towards a warmer climate. If the Arctic Ocean becomes free from sea ice in the summer, there will be new possibilities for extracting oil and gas there as well as for shipping. As a consequence, sustainable resource use and governance have become central items on the political agenda of states. The objective of this course is to explain this development from a long-term historical perspective.
Students who apply for the course before 1 March will have the possibility to apply for funding to cover the costs for the field work at Svalbard.
